Project

Data Centre Rationalisation;

After a review of the existing server infrastructure within retail bank operation, a project was formed to decommission, consolidate or virtualise workloads. A VMware based virtual infrastructure was established for the purpose of rehoming workloads, which were converted from their physical state.

Processes were established that categorised systems and fed discovery information into the service and change management teams for ongoing lifecycle management.

The project integrated with the business-as-usual IT and services teams to ensure knowledge about services and their comprising servers and solutions were fully documented and used to support the retail business and future changes.

The result

Outcome

Thousands of workloads reviewed and categorised, converted on to the VMware virtual infrastructure.

Reduction in physical data centre space consumed, which brought about cost savings and introduced the ability to expand the existing virtual infrastructure and introduce new capabilities and resilience. A standardised approach to virtualisation was then able to be used across the business and the virtual infrastructure meant that new workloads were built to a defined standard, hosted in a resilient and highly available software defined data centre (SDDC).

Virtual infrastructure allowed the business to react to growth or contraction, support innovation and provide greater resilience to the services offered by the business.
